John A. Best, 78, of St. Petersburg passed January 7, 2020. Born in Brooklyn, New York, John attended St. Anthony’s Church, won the neighborhood stick ball championship three times, and graduated from Thomas Edison High School. Shortly thereafter, he met his future wife of 55 years, Sue, and earned an accounting degree from Michigan State University. In 1968, they settled in St. Petersburg Florida. For the next three decades, John worked as an accountant at Florida Power Corporation. He raised three sons, coaching them in baseball, driving them to endless swim meets, and shepherding them to their Eagle Scouts. He was a long-time fan of the Tampa Bay Rays and Buccaneers. He loved Crabby Bill’s fish sandwiches, Little Italy’s pizza, ripe honeydew, and never turned down a Drake’s Devil Dog. Among his favorite TV shows were Three’s Company, All in the Family, Survivor, and Blue Bloods and he treasured the films of Alfred Hitchcock. He dug the music of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Broadway. He enjoyed visiting America’s national parks and playing five-card draw in Las Vegas. He attended mass regularly at St. Jude’s Catholic Church. In his retirement, he volunteered at Ronald McDonald House, Meals on Wheels, and the International Museum. He mastered Sudoku, took up boxing, and bounced seven grandbabies on his lap. He is survived by his wife, three sons, seven grandchildren and his sister and will be sorely missed. There will be a Funeral Mass Monday, January 13, 2020 at 9:30 am at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle (Our Lady's Chapel).
